Implants, are they for me?

Implants, are they for me?

We've come a long way in dentistry. Gone are the days when dentures were a right of passage for all of our grandmothers and grandfathers. As a child I was obsessed with looking at my grandmother's dentures, I guess I was destined to enter the dental field! But despite our best efforts in dentistry to focus on preventative care, millions of Americans are stiil losing their teeth! Most cases of tooth loss are a result of gum disease, decay or trauma. In the past the only treatment options available to replace these missing teeth were bridges or dentures, but today we have dental implants. Dental implants have truly revolutionized smile reconstruction.

A dental implant replaces the tooth root and crown unlike bridges and dentures which only replace the crown of the tooth. The tooth root is what gives you the stability and aesthetics of a real tooth. Because implants fuse to the bone they are fixed and permanent. There are other advantages to implants in addition to their permanency. Implants are more comfortable and durable then dentures and as a result they give you a more confident smile. You do not have the sliding and shrinking of the tissue usually associated with dentures which can affect eating and speech.

Implants are very versatile as they can replace a single tooth, a series of teeth, or even an entire arch of upper or lower teeth. Today implants are carried out safely and quickly with little to no discomfort. Because we have a board certified periodontist on staff you will have all of your work carried out in the convenience of our dental practice. There are several techniques and choices to be made so be sure to discuss your treatment options with Dr. Vitale at your next visit.
