What is dental plaque?

Dental plaque is an invisible film of bacteria that accumulates on the teeth and gums, primarily along the gum line and between the teeth. Dental plaque that is not removed from the teeth can lead to gingivitis(gum inflammation), periodontitis(gum disease), and caries(tooth decay). Plaque is comprised of bacteria, saliva, dead cells, and food debri.

There are approximately 400 different types of bacteria present in plaque. If this plaque is not removed daily through proper oral hygiene, the bacteria thickens and changes in make up increasing the risk of gum disease and decay. Plaque begins to  build up shortly after brushing your teeth or having a dental cleaning. When you eat, the sugar from your food mixes with the plaque to create an acid that starts the break down process.

Brushing your teeth 2-3 times per day and flossing one time per day helps to prevent the break down process. Reducing the amount of sugar in your diet will also help to control the growth of bacteria. Visiting our office for regular cleanings and check ups 2-3 times a year will help to assure the health and longevity of your teeth!
