How do dental implants work?

Roots are a crucial, though often underappreciated, part of your teeth. After all, without strong, stable roots, it's impossible to bite into hard, tough, or sticky foods. For those experiencing tooth loss, most tooth restorations, unfortunately, are not able to replace these important tooth parts. However, dental implants can effectively mimic the role of roots due to both their placement in the jaw and how their titanium makeup naturally fuses with bone.

The first step of the implant process requires minor oral surgery to place the implants in the jawbone and cover them with gum tissue. During the few months following the procedure, the implants will osseointegrate (i.e. bond) to your jawbone, creating synthetic roots that are just as secure as your natural ones. Once osseointegration occurs, a dental crown will be attached to the top of the implant, creating a brand new tooth.

I've lost more than one tooth, can I still get dental implants?

Implants aren't limited in replacing single teeth. In fact, they can be attached to a bridge to replace several missing teeth at a time. Implants are even an option if you've lost all of your teeth! In this last case, implant-supported dentures offer excellent biting power and can be attached to as few as four dental implants.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants may be a good choice for you if:

  • Your oral and general health is good.
  • Good oral hygiene is a priority for you.
  • You have good jawbone depth (if depth is a problem, a bone graft may be recommended)
  • You don't smoke or plan to give it up (smoking interferes with healing)
  • You don't have a disease or condition that affects your immune system or don't take medications that suppress the immune system.

Although your Old Bridge dentist will need to perform an examination and take a few X-rays to determine if you're a good candidate, dental implants remain an excellent choice for most people who seek treatment.
